Kazak Royal

Mao of Afghanistan

Origin:

This style of carpet is mainly made by the Afghan refugees weavers, establishes on the Afghan-Pakistani border near "Ghazni" (also city from which the wool of very high quality). They strive to respect the ancestral knowledge of carpet "Kazak" Caucasus region of south-eastern Europe, south-west of Russia.
Since the invasion of Afghanistan by the Soviets in 1979, Afghan refugee weavers have maintained an alliance with the Pakistanis. Because the Afghan infrastructure is missing, the carpets are sent to Pakistan to be able to ship to the west from the carpet export center in Peshawar.

Features:

These solid rugs have a rustic and bright abstract simple designs, mostly geometric, accompanied by bright contrasting colors. Sometimes, stylized animal motifs may also be present.
- Knotted with Turkish knot (turkbaf).
- Density: from 900 to 1600 knots/dm².
- Background colors usually brick-red, dark blue or beige with colorful motifs.
- Handspun wool for the pile.
- The warp (extension fringes) in wool or cotton.

Note:

These carpets are often singular variations that may appear, depending on your point of view, either as a default or as a quality, but is anyway a strange characteristic: the color of certain motifs or the background sometimes varies from one place to another, and it may even change completely. This change of color, called "abrash" occurs mainly in carpets of old manufacture. The presence of "abrash" proves that the carpet was spun and dyed by hand. Indeed, it is difficult when dyed by craftsmen, to find the same color in two successive dye baths.

L-M Brennet

Cordialement.
