Nain Kashmar

Map Nain Iran

Origin: Nain

Nain, a small town in central Iran located halfway between Isfahan and Yazd on the edge of the vast desert plateau.

Characteristics:

Abstract floral decoration consisting of arabesques; boteh, flowers, spirals, leaves, etc ... With the edges of the patterns always underlined by brilliant contrasts in natural silk.
Typical associated colors are beige, ivory, white, sapphire, rarely light green.
Carpets of great finesse with a concentration of 17.000 +- 3.600 to +- knots/dm².

This carpet is knotted with the Persian knot (farsbaf).
Warp and weft in cotton.
The pile is in wool and natural silk.

Note:

Nain produced only since sixty years. You should also know that the market offer carpets since twenty years look like the Nain that are knotted, more broadly, in the Khorasan (Birjand, Nishapur, Kachmar and Tabas) west of the same region and Baboul near the Caspian Sea, with a concentration of 1,500 to 2,500 knots/dm².

The quality of this rug is determined by the denomination "Nain 9la", "Nain 6la" or "Nain 4la", where "La" means the number of twisted cotton wires in each warp (the fringes of a hand knotted carpet are an extension of the warps).
Who less the value of "La", who finer the carpet is knotted and who more the carpet will be expensive.

Only the finest merit the name of Nain:
- The 9la (No-Lah) from 3500 to 5500 knots/dm²
- The 6la (Shish-Lah) from 8500 to 10000 nodes/dm²
- The 4la from 12,000 to 17,000 knots/dm²

Jean-Bertrand Guinant
